As a part of my routine job, today I received a call from one of my officemates. His requirement was something really interesting. He wants to take the screenshot of his computer screen and that too of a particular portion only. Probably he doesn’t want his boss to know about the extra things that he is doing in the office. As Microsoft provides an easy option for this in the form of “Snipping Tool”, I was able to support him quite easily.
He was amazed to see this less used feature of the Windows-based computers. He also thanked me for teaching him the best option to take screenshots on the laptops and desktops. This made me think of sharing this hidden feature of the Windows computers with my readers. So, here I will show you how to take customized screenshots with the help of Snipping Tool.
What is Snipping Tool & Where is it Hiding?
I would like to call the Snipping Tool as a hidden feature because even most of the regular computer users are not aware of this option. All the Windows Operating Systems starting from the Windows Vista comes with the Snipping Tool preloaded in them. But I don’t know why Microsoft does not shows enough interest in making this feature useful to their users. The Snipping Tool is basically an inbuilt feature of all the latest Windows Operating Systems. It can help you to take the screenshots in a very customized way. For example, if you want to take the screenshot of only a portion of your screen, the normal screenshot option can’t help you. It is at this stage the Snipping Tool comes to your help. Making use of this application, you can take the exact screenshot of the screen that you really want to take.
Till the latest Windows 10 version, the Microsoft has not provided any keys or keyboard shortcuts for this feature. So, you should dig deep into the application list to find the Snipping Tool. This application falls under the category of “Windows Accessories”. So, you can find it on this list along with other useful apps like the Microsoft Paint. If you are not sure where these features lie, then there is an easy option for this. Go to the Windows Search Bar on your computer, type "Snipping Tool" and press enter. In the search result, you can find this amazing app and it can be directly opened from there.
How to Use the Windows Snipping Tool?
The Snipping Tool is a very useful feature that can be easily used for all your screenshot requirements. Once you open the Snipping Tool, you can find a “New” option on the top left corner. Clicking on this will make your screen seen as something like freeze. Now select the portion of the screen that you want to take the screenshot. Then click on the “Save” icon available on the Snipping Tool. Now you will be asked to browse the location where you want to save the file. You can select any location as per your wish and can save the file in image, HTML or GIF format. There is an option to select this screenshot as a direct attachment to your emails as well. The Snipping Tool also allows you to paste the snipped portion to files like Word, Excel etc. without saving it in your PCs.

By default, Snipping Tool allows you to take the screenshots in rectangular shapes. However, alternate options are also available for this. To change the shape, click on the drop-down arrow on the right side of the “New” option. There you can find multiple options available for snipping. A pen feature is available in this app which can help you mark any portion of the screenshot. Even a highlighter is available which can be useful at a lot of times. If you think that you have marked or highlighted something wrong, the Eraser feature supports for making necessary changes. You can also set the delay for the screenshot with the help of the “Delay” feature in this tool. So, this simple application is found to be full of user-friendly features.
